Manchester United look set to change their priority goalkeeper transfer target after being priced out of a move for their favoured target.
Rúben Amorim has used two goalkeepers in the Premier League in his short time at the club, but both have struggled to impress in between the sticks.
Andre Onana was first-choice for the majority of the season, but he was replaced by Altay Bayindir towards the end of the season so he could focus on the Europa League campaign.
Both were signed under Erik ten Hag, so it appears Jason Wilcox is looking for a new shotstopper to become the base of Amorim’s rebuild at Old Trafford.
United identified three potential options earlier this summer, but they now appear to be favouring other options, especially after MEN reported Tom Heaton had signed a new deal at the club.
With Heaton set to stay, being home-grown will not be an important factor in new goalkeeper targets, but the price tag remains a concern.
United set to move on from Carnesecchi
Gianluca Di Marzio has recently reported that Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi was the goalkeeper that United “likes the most” if Onana moves to AS Monaco.
TuttoMercato then reported that the Italian goalkeeper would be available for £42 million, with United only valuing Carnesecchi at £34 million.
The Red Devils are yet to make an offer for the shotstopper, but Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, have now suggested that Amorim’s side could step aside from Carnesecchi due to the high price tag.
After claiming that the valuation is ‘scaring’ United away, the report added: “The idea isn’t dead, just put to one side for now,” with the £42 million fee “encouraging them [United] to consider other options instead.”
Rather than moving for the Italian, some reports suggest that United may move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, who could cost between £30-40 million.
Onana transfer suits all parties
Before his move to Old Trafford, Onana was considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, especially after his quarterback-like performance in the Champions League final.
However, since becoming United’s No.24, the Cameroonian has struggled to show the same form in between the sticks. With some suggesting that he has been asked to play out from the back less, despite that being his biggest strength.

A new goalkeeper could be the perfect solution for Amorim, as he looks to rebuild United in the coming years, returning the club to where it truly belongs.
No matter how he performs next season, Onana will always have doubters in the fanbase due to his shaky start, a move away could help him regain his form and United turn over a new leaf.
