Manchester United receive transfer setback in chase for Bundesliga star perfect for Ruben Amorim’s system
Manchester United have received a setback in their transfer chase for a Bundesliga defender who is perfect for Ruben Amorim’s system.
Manchester United are already planning for the upcoming transfer markets after bringing in five first-team players during the recent summer window.
According to a recent report from Fichajes, the club has initiated contact with the representatives of Bayer Leverkusen center-back Jonathan Tah regarding a potential move next summer.
Tah’s current contract with the Bundesliga outfit expires in June 2025, allowing him to negotiate pre-contract terms with other clubs as early as January.
The report stated that United and Barcelona were the two clubs showing the most interest in the 28-year-old defender, who is not expected to renew his deal with the German side.
With the futures of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, and Jonny Evans uncertain, United could face a defensive reshuffle next summer, making Tah a potential key target.
Tah also has great experience playing in a back three formation, starting 30 of Leverkusen’s 34 Bundesliga fixtures during their unbeaten title-winning campaign last term.
With Ruben Amorim set to introduce the same formation at Old Trafford, it would make great sense to bring in defenders who are comfortable in that shape.
However, a new report from caughtoffside has claimed that Premier League rivals Chelsea are now leading the race for the potential signing of the 28-year-old.
The Blues are making early efforts to try to move into a strong position for Tah, who can start talking with clubs in two months time, in what could be a major blow for United.
While there are other defensive options on the market, Tah being available on a free deal is extremely attractive considering the amount of other work in the transfer window United need to do.
It is well-known that the Reds are not in the best financial position and needed to sell to buy last summer, so they should be looking to take advantage of good deals like this.
