Manchester United receive Ruben Amorim boost after Sporting manager’s latest comments
Manchester United have received a boost in relation to potential managerial target Ruben Amorim after the Sporting manager’s latest comments.
Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United was uncertain over the summer, even after his FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City in May.
INEOS ultimately chose to back the Dutchman by extending his contract, but concerns have resurfaced following a poor start to the new season.
With just three wins from their first 10 matches of the season, United sit 14th in the Premier League table.
Although INEOS is currently standing by the 54-year-old manager, it’s clear that both results and performances need to improve swiftly as the team prepares to face Brentford this weekend.
Should that not happen, Ten Hag could see his United future cut short and the club will need to identify their next manager, with multiple options being reported.
Ruben Amorim’s latest comments give United boost
Manchester City confirmed that their long-term sporting director Txiki Begiristain would depart the club next year and Sporting CP’s Hugo Viana will replace him.
With there also being uncertainty over Pep Guardiola’s future, that has led to rumours that Ruben Amorim would join his director at the Etihad Stadium.
However, with United also reportedly keen on the manager if they need a change, he has clarified his position following Viana’s move.
In an interview with Cabine Desportiva, Amorim brushed aside rumours that he would also be heading to City, explaining that he has a ‘seperate’ path to Viana.
“Hugo Viana and me, we have different and separate paths,” said Amorim. “His appointment doesn’t mean that I’m going to Man City. We have a very good professional relationship.
“Nothing about Sporting has changed. Nothing. Everything remains the same until the end of the season,” he added, before discussing the upcoming Champions League clash against Guardiola’s side.
“Obviously, Viana, during City’s week, won’t be available to enter the dressing room. I’m going to leave him out, to avoid conflicts. Otherwise, everything will stay the same until the end of the season.”
United may not need to enter the managerial market if Ten Hag manages to turn things around, but being prepared for that scenario is important.
Amorim is an exciting coach and could be one of the main options to come into the club. It is a positive sign that he does not necessarily see his future linked with Viana’s – although, of course, City may well push for that deal.
