Manchester United receive double transfer boost after latest Euro 2024 decision
Manchester United have received a transfer boost ahead of the summer window following the latest Euro 2024 decision.
England confirmed their final 26-man squad for the upcoming European Championships on Thursday, with seven out of the 33-man preliminary squad.
United defender Harry Maguire missed out due to injury, and another surprising cut was Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton.
Due to Maguire’s absence, it seemed likely that the young defender would travel to Germany but other options have been preferred.
“It’s a bit early for Jarrad. He’s had a fabulous season. You’d like that balance of left footers. For him to be ahead of the others, I don’t think that would have been the right decision,” Gareth Southgate said.
Although Branthwaite missing out on a spot in the squad will be a huge blow for him, it boosts United’s chances of signing him if they choose to move forward.
The Reds have been heavily linked to the left-footed centre-back in recent months.
The 21-year-old now has a free summer, so United will have plenty of time to negotiate a deal to strengthen their defensive line.
The Everton defender will command a substantial transfer fee, but he is undoubtedly an investment for the future as INEOS look to build an improved squad for the long term.
Also, with a high transfer fee expected already, Branthwaite’s price also won’t be further inflated by impressive performances at an international tournament.
This has become a regular occurrence in summers when the European Championships or World Cup take place.
INEOS must make their decision on Erik ten Hag and the managerial situation next and then they can decide whether to move forward on potential signings like Branthwaite.
