Manchester United produce late U-turn on summer sale after Ruben Amorim’s defence of “unbelievable” star

Manchester United have produced a late U-turn on a potential summer sale following Ruben Amorim’s defence of one “unbelievable” star.

Manchester United have completed four major signings so far this summer with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško and Diego Leon joining the club.

Ruben Amorim’s side still want to make more signings before the transfer deadline and a deal for Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens is closing in this week.

The current goalkeeper unit at Old Trafford consists of André Onana, Altay Bayındır and Tom Heaton but there are major doubts over that trio.

Lammens is not expected to come in and immediately take Onana’s spot, with the Cameroon goalkeeper not set to depart this summer.

However, all summer reports have claimed that United would only make a signing between the sticks if one of their goalkeepers was going to leave. That has made people assume that Bayındır is now on the way out.

United produce late U-turn on summer sale

Despite those previous reports, it appears that United have produced a U-turn in their goalkeeper stance in recent days.

According to Ben Jacobs, both Onana and Bayındır are expected to stay at the club until at least January regardless of Lammens’ arrival.

It was added that this is partly down to the Africa Cup of Nations, which Onana will play in with Cameroon between December and January.

This means that United could have three goalkeepers vying for a place in the team and Heaton behind them. Lammens will likely leapfrog Bayındır and challenge Onana for a spot in the team.

United’s change in stance comes shortly after Amorim came to the defence of Bayındır after his mistake against Arsenal, labelling him as “unbelievable” goalkeeper.

Lammens’ performances can define goalkeeper exit

It is quite unusual that United are not pushing Bayındır to depart this summer with the arrival of Lammens.

But it also brings Onana’s position into question. By the time the January window comes around, United will know more whether Lammens is good enough to start for the club or not.

If he is, then Bayındır could actually end up staying while Onana’s place at the club moves into doubt. It feels like these coming months will be key for the future of those two players.

Should neither of them leave the club in January, it feels inevitable that an exit will come next summer and Lammens’ performances could define who that will be.
