Manchester United no longer expected to sign ‘world-class’ star, £17m alternative is prepared to join instead

Manchester United are still active in the transfer window heading into the final weeks and they are now no longer expected to sign a ‘world-class’ star.

Manchester United kicked off the summer transfer window on a high, securing Matheus Cunha from Wolves along with the promising defender Diego Leon.

After protracted talks, Bryan Mbeumo was added to the squad ahead of the US tour, and last week saw the arrival of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško.

Despite their £200 million outlay so far, the Reds remain interested in making more signings, with a midfielder and goalkeeper the two main targets.

Carlos Baleba is the priority in the middle of the park for Ruben Amorim, while several shot-stoppers have been linked with an Old Trafford move in recent weeks.

United no longer expected to sign Donnarumma

United fans have been demanding the club to sign a new goalkeeper after losing trust in André Onana last season following several high-profile errors.

The Reds initially tried to sign Emi Martínez from Aston Villa on loan but their approach was rebuffed by their Premier League rivals.

It then became clear that Paris Saint-Germain were keen to sell Gianluigi Donnarumma after securing the signing of Lucas Chevalier this summer.

United have been linked with the world-class Italian goalkeeper but the latest reports from The Athletic have essentially ruled out the possibility of his signing.

They claim that United’s stance on like Donnarumma, who would cost plenty in wages, is that a signing could only happen if Onana departs, and there are no signs of that at present.

A move for Donnarumma is not expected to materialise for that reason, the report added, although there are other potential solutions for this issue.

Lammens could join United instead

While United are not going to sign a high-profile ‘keeper without Onana’s departure, they could end up signing a strong backup should Altay Bayındır find a new club.

Senne Lammens has been regularly linked with United over the last year and even previously admitted to studying his potential team.

United have held talks over a potential move for Lammens this summer, and he would reportedly cost around £17 million with minimal wage demands.

The 23-year-old is highly-rated and could provide better competition for Onana than Bayındır has over the last two seasons. Reports have suggested that he is open to joining the Old Trafford club.
