Manchester United are looking to extend Jonny Evans’ contract at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag confirms the two parties are in talks.

The veteran defender signed a short-term deal with his former club during pre-season to regain fitness after his contract at Leicester City ran out and also to offer support and guidance to the younger players within United’s ranks.

Evans played four games across United’s pre-season tour, including a 74 minute cameo during the 3-1 loss against Wrexham where he was alongside a youthful set-up.

Whilst it seemed that the defender’s return at Old Trafford would be short lived, manager Ten Hag has explained that the club are looking to extend his deal even though Harry Maguire’s move to West Ham has broken down.

“The [answer to the] last [question is], no. No, it doesn’t affect that,” responded the Dutchman when asked if Maguire stayed means it’s unlikely Evans will extend. “We will see. We are in talks and when we have news, we will bring that as always.

“In this moment, [he’s] not [under contract]. I have to say, it’s a short [deal] for [last] month [July]. But we are talking.”

Further questions came too whether Ten Hag wanted the Northern Irish defender to stay, he added: “Yeah. Otherwise, we would not talk.”

Meanwhile, Ten Hag has shown support to Maguire, who looks set to remain at Old Trafford for the season.

“I’m happy he’s here,” stated Ten Hag. “So, we need a good squad. We have four good centre-halves, even with Luke Shaw if you count him we have five, and we need that because we’re going to play 50 or 60 games this season.

“All the players are internationals, so we have a lot of load to cover. So, I’m very happy Harry Maguire is here. He has to fight for his position, as [does] everyone in the squad. So, we construct a squad with the double positions, but we need it.”
