Manchester United and Erik ten Hag are said to be targeting a further signing in their midfield area as the 2023/24 Premier League season gets underway.

After Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday evening, many pointed out that Erik ten Hag’s midfield was cut through too easily.

United have already signed Mason Mount already this summer, but with Fred having left and Donny van de Beek potentially out the door behind him, signing a defensive midfielder this summer is an increasing priority.

The Reds have been linked with Everton’s Amadou Onana for the position, but former United player Mikaël Silvestre believes that he is not the right man for the club.

“I understand why, profile-wise, this is a player they are looking for, but when you have Scott McTominay, I don’t see what Onana will add to United if you want to step up and challenge for the title,” Silvestre said to bettingexpert.

“He’s not a player United should be chasing.

“Physically, he and McTominay have the same profile, and it’s not an upgrade, so I don’t think it makes sense unless you’re looking for backup.”

Everton are said to be demanding between £50-60 million for the player, with the Merseyside keen to keep their starting squad in their bid to remain in the Premier League for another season.

United have also held an interest in Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, although the club are yet to put in a formal offer for the midfielder, who will likely cost around £25m.
