Manchester United are reportedly “seriously considering” selling André Onana and have started to identify potential replacements for the goalkeeper.
Ruben Amorim’s time at Manchester United has not been easy, especially with only one transfer window and several first-team players signed by Erik ten Hag.
While some ten Hag signings have impressed, with Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt becoming key players under Amorim, some transfers by the Dutchman have failed to live up to expectations.
Mason Mount was purchased for a reported fee of £55 million, but he appears unable to stay fit consistently. The former Chelsea midfielder has shown glimpses of his old form, but his fitness struggles continue to hold him back.
Rasmus Hojlund has also struggled this season, especially since the departure of ten Hag. The Danish striker lost his confidence after a poor spell in front of goal and now appears to have lost faith from United’s coaching team, with Joshua Zirkzee regularly replacing Hojlund.
However, it is another United starter who appears to be set for a move in the summer transfer window. With GiveMeSport sources saying “there is serious consideration at the club to signing a replacement this summer.”
Onana to leave United this summer
United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon saw another poor performance from Andre Onana, many feel the Cameroonian was at fault for both goals.
Onana had a point to prove after former Red Devils midfielder Nemanja Matic described him as “the worst goalkeeper in the club’s history.” However, the goalkeeper failed to impress, adding to the series of underwhelming performances that have seen him “losing the trust of coaches at Carrington.”
As per GiveMeSport, United were only planning on signing a new backup goalkeeper this summer, due to the uncertainty of Altay Bayindir’s future.
There is now a “serious possibility” that Amorim will look for a new number one this summer.
Onana’s £200,000 a week contract could be a stumbling block in United’s attempt to sell the goalkeeper, but insiders close to the club are hopeful that an offer could arise from a club in Saudi Arabia.
United look at three potential replacements
Burnley’s James Trafford is a name at the top of United’s considerations, despite being heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United.
Lucas Chevalier of Lille is another candidate to replace Onana, but the French club will demand a high fee for the 23-year-old Frenchman.
The final name on United’s radar is Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, the 22-year-old is only in his first season as a regular starter, but he has been described as “an intriguing option.”
It could be a goalkeeper turnaround this summer, with Tom Heaton set to retire. United have been linked with Freddie Woodman to fulfil their homegrown quota and to replace Heaton.
