Manchester United have identified that they will have to take a large loss if they are to sell Harry Maguire in the coming summer transfer window.

The defender was signed from Leicester City for a record £80 million in 2019 and soon after became the captain of the club.

However, since Erik ten Hag took control at Old Trafford, the Englishman has fell out of favour. Lisandro Martinez has been one of the best players since joining from Ajax and Raphael Varane has built a great relationship at the back with the Argentine.

Latest reports coming from Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail has revealed that United are expecting to take a 50 per cent loss on the defender should they sell him this summer.

It was added that the club are open to selling Maguire in the coming summer, with the 29-year-old having started just five Premier League matches so far this season.

Maguire’s £180,000-per-week contract at Old Trafford runs until June 2025 and with the performances of Martinez and Varane, there is a growing acceptance from Maguire and United’s side that a move away for the defender is the best option going forward.

The centre-back started the latest game against Leeds United at Elland Road and failed to impress on the right side of the centre-back partnership.

It was by no means a poor showing from the captain, but he was unable to show any of his qualities on the ball and regularly slowed down the play from the back.

Despite his performance, Maguire was focused on the positive result for United, who temporarily moved into second-place in the league table before Manchester City won against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the club being successful and I want to be a part of it,’ he told Sky Sports.

“I’m the captain and I put the team miles before myself. Whether I’m playing or not, I want the team to do well.

“I’m still getting my minutes. Everyone wants to start games, and it’s disappointing when you don’t. You have four international centre-backs at this club and there will always be two who are unhappy. I just have to be ready for when the chance comes.”
