Manchester United are expected to make a variety of changes to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.
It has been a terrible season for Manchester United domestically, with the Reds sitting 16th in the Premier League table heading into the final weeks of the season.
They do still have the chance to end the campaign on a high by winning the Europa League, but that will not solve the issues which exist at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim is fully aware of this and wants significant changes in the summer ahead of his first full season in charge at the club.
United are planning to make several signings, and a lot of sales too, in order to give Amorim the best chance of success after a troubling first six months.
United have identified third priority transfer target
While there is a lot of work to do at United this summer, the priority signings have been made clear by various outlets – a striker and attacking midfielder.
A fresh report from the Manchester Evening News has reiterated that, with Liam Delap and Matheus Cunha being the two players the Reds want to sign for those positions.
Cunha is keen on a move to Old Trafford and the Reds are prepared to make a bid for the Wolves star. Meanwhile, reports this week claim that United are confident of securing Delap from Ipswich Town as well.
However, the report from MEN also mentioned a third priority position United now have after those developments for the two other potential signings.
It was claimed that a central midfielder is another ‘priority target’ for Amorim with the likely departure of Christian Eriksen coming this summer. There are also uncertainties over United’s over midfield options like Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.
The report explained that any other signings will depend of sales, which suggests that United will be able to sign a midfielder – alongside the two attacking positions – without worrying about generating funds through player exits.
Various midfield players have been linked with an Old Trafford move, including Atalanta star Ederson and Jobe Bellingham of Sunderland.
What kind of midfielder do United need?
Everyone would agree that United’s biggest issue this season has been the lack of quality in the final third, which makes the attacking signings more than understandable.
Others may argue that a goalkeeper signing is up there in terms of priority but Amorim is a fan of André Onana and looks likely to continue with him as the first-choice for at least another season.
The midfield area has been a contentious area for a number of years. United have had many decent players in the engine room but hardly any who can conduct the play from deep like any good team needs.
Nemanja Matic and Michael Carrick are the only two players from the last decade who could play that role expertly, and United need to find another in the transfer market.
