Manchester United have faced a massive transfer setback, with news that Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has signed a new contract with the team.

Tel, 18, has scored 13 goals and picked up 4 assists during his time with the Bundesliga side, first signing from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais back in July of 2022.

Forced to move Alejandro Garnacho to the right side this season, United have begun the hunt for a long-term solution to their troubles in the position, with Tel highlighted as a potential option.

Amongst the lacklustre form of Jadon Sancho and Antony, United have spent big on several right-wing options that have underwhelmed at Old Trafford and the first transfer window under INEOS needs to be a success.

With several reports highlighting United’s interest in signing Tel this summer, the 18-year-old had the potential to be United’s next big buy, but news that the Frenchman has now signed a new deal with Bayern will rule out further speculation.

It had been reported by German outlet Sport Bild that Tel was at least considering a potential move to Old Trafford. However, with Tel now officially signing a new contract with the Bundesliga giants, such a move now seems impossible.

Tel’s new contract with Bayern is set to run untill 2029, with the club announcing that he “is an important building block for the future of this team.”

In the wake of Tel signing a new contract with Bayern, United will now need to turn to alternative targets if they hope to strengthen the right-wing position this summer.

Throughout this year both Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, and Athletic Club’s Nico Williams both being heavily linked with a potential switch to United.

Utd District had exclusively reported back in January that Williams, 21, was seen as “an ideal option” to fix United’s right-wing problems.
