Manchester United eyeing transfer boost as Erik ten Hag prodigy’s sell-on clause could be activated

Manchester United look set for a transfer budget boost as another former player’s sell-on clause could be activated in the coming weeks.

While Manchester United are yet to sell anyone this summer, they have received some funds from former players moving on from their clubs and activating a sell-on clause in their contract.

Anthony Elanga, who starred for United under Ralf Rangnick, moved to Newcastle United from Nottingham Forest for an approximate fee of £55 million, making United just under £10 million due to their sell-on clause.

Another former Red Devil, Alvaro Carreras, recently made a move to Real Madrid after impressing at Benfica, with many United fans questioning why Rúben Amorim didn’t request the Spaniard to rejoin the club as an attacking left wing-back.

In recent days, Maxi Oyedele also made his second move after leaving United. Oyedele, who trained with Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro this summer, has just moved to Strasbourg, potentially opening the door to a Chelsea transfer in a few years.

Sell-on clauses are nothing new to the Premier League, but United finally seem to be profiting from them as the famous Carrington Academy continues to deliver at Old Trafford, and across the world.

Pellistri set to activate sell-on clause

Towards the end of last year’s summer transfer window, Facundo Pellistri left United to sign for Panathinaikos in the Greek top flight for a fee of £5.1 million.

Manchester Evening News have reported that the Red Devils included a buy-back clause for the right winger, as well as a 45% sell-on clause on any profit the Greek side made on Pellistri.

Despite his glimpses of form under Erik ten Hag, Pellistri has had a poor season for Panathinaikos, registering just four goals in his 35 appearances.

João Van Boysen has reported that Fluminense are targeting the Uruguayan winger as a replacement for John Arias, with a deal benefiting United if he leaves for over £5.1 million.

If the Greek side receive a £7.1 million transfer fee for Pellistri, United will gain £900,000 to add to their transfer budget, potentially funding another academy signing like Enzo Kana-Biyik or Harley Emsden-James.

Evans needs to continue academy sales

Jonny Evans has recently been given a new role at United since retiring from professional football – the former Northern Ireland centre back is now head of pathways and loan manager at Old Trafford.

Evans has already impressed in his new position, utilising the multi-club model and securing a very smart deal for Habeeb Ogunneye.

However, the former central defender needs to continue the academy sales that United have started to do in recent years. Players with high potential should, of course, remain at the club, but so many young players leave on a free at Old Trafford.

The club need to recognise who is likely to make an impact on the first team and prioritise giving them opportunities, while still ensuring the other players get what’s best for their development, with first-team football elsewhere.
