Manchester United eye “brilliant” goalkeeper to replace Andre Onana next season after being ‘betrayed’

Manchester United look set to search for another goalkeeper to replace Andre Onana, and one “brilliant” shot-stopper appears to be the next name on the list.

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department looks set for a complete overhaul ahead of the 2025/26 season and the first full season under Rúben Amorim.

All three senior shotstoppers appeared to be leaving the club until Tom Heaton signed a new contract to remain at Old Trafford for another year, likely remaining as third-choice goalkeeper.

The futures of Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana are still unknown, with rumours before the end of the season suggesting both could leave, but both remain at the club with the first pre-season game just under three weeks away.

While Bayinidr is expected to leave United this summer, earlier reports suggest Onana is now set to stay at Old Trafford this summer. However, another goalkeeper could be signed to provide competition for the Cameroonian.

Before the end of the season, the Red Devils identified three replacements that could potentially replace Erik ten Hag’s old shot-stopper, but links to different options, including Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, continue to arise.

United eye Ter Stegen to replace Onana

After his troubles with injuries in previous years, Barcelona have replaced Marc-Andre Ter Stegen with the signings of Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny, meaning gametime could be difficult to come by for the German.

As per FCBN, United “could soon offer him [Ter Stegen] a very interesting contract” to join Amorim’s rebuild and return the Red Devils to the top of the Premier League.

While Jason Wilcox is looking to spend money on other areas of the pitch, with the deal for Bryan Mbeumo nearly concluded, “the club does not rule out offering a low sum” or “agreeing to a loan with an option to buy” for Ter Stegen, who Football Espana report as feeling betrayed by his current club.

With “interest from several clubs in Saudi Arabia,” Onana could still leave United, especially if the former Barcelona academy player isn’t happy about competition for his place.

Ter Stegen, who was once described as “brilliant” by Planet Football, could be the stable option Amorim needs in goal, while the outfield adapts to his style of play.

Exciting young goalkeeper prospects

Signing an older goalkeeper, like Ter Stegen, could be favourable this summer, with several exciting shot-stoppers in United’s academy.

In recent years, the Red Devils have produced Dean Henderson and Matěj Kovář, both of whom have demonstrated ability ahead of goalkeepers who have remained at the club.

The next shotstopper who could be involved in United’s first team is Radek Vítek, who spent last season on loan in the Austrian top division, keeping six clean sheets as his side finished sixth.

Elyh Harrison is another exciting prospect in the Red Devils’ academy, with many suggesting he is one of the best talents currently at the club.
