Two Manchester United players have been singled out for their good performances against Luton Town in the Premier League by Andros Townsend.

Manchester United defeated Luton Town 1-0 during their last Premier League outing before the international break thanks to a fine finish from Victor Lindelöf in the second half.

The victory saw Erik ten Hag‘s men claim 12 points from their last five league games, the highest in the league during that time frame and helped rejuvenate morale after what has been a tough and inconsistent season so far.

The Luton win was no easy feat, with the squad having to grind hard against a stubborn team in order to claim the three points at Old Trafford, although current Luton player Andros Townsend Sr has explained just how difficult United were to play against.

“Extremely difficult. They are difficult,” Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live when asked what it was like coming up against United.

‘We were able to defend against them well but similar to Liverpool they just find a way. Honestly, it was an extremely tough game.

“There was rotation all over the pitch. We were well-drilled and confident as we had just got a point against Liverpool the week before, we had a game plan to press high up the pitch and force turnovers, United didn’t really give us anything.”

Townsend singled out two of Ten Hag’s players for special praise, with captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Harry Maguire said to have played crucial roles in the game.

“Bruno Fernandes drifts out to the outside left position, links up with [Sergio] Reguilon, they get a few crosses that way,’ he said. ‘[Diogo] Dalot comes to midfield creating an overload and we did limit them to very few chances and defended well.

“Unfortunately, we switched off at one set piece and that was our whole game plan done. At the top level, you need to stay switched on for 95 to 96 minutes because these top teams can punish you.

“Maguire was good on the ball, we tried to press him but he was very good, Bruno Fernandes didn’t give us anything.

“You look on the stats sheet and it might be like United didn’t do this or that but it was so difficult for us to be able to contain this United side. They posed so many problems, even if it doesn’t show up on a piece of paper.”
