Manchester United prepare dream double signing as Old Trafford exit confirmed
Manchester United are preparing what could be considered a dream double signing as another Old Trafford exit is confirmed.
The Reds are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this summer after experiencing major difficulties through injury in the position last term.
Raphaël Varane’s departure has made it even more apparent that Erik ten Hag’s side needs major additions in the backline.
It has been made clear that United want two new centre-backs, one left-footed and the other right-footed.
Jarrad Branthwaite is the clear option for the left-sided centre-back, and he’s already agreed personal terms with United.
A £43 million bid has been rejected by Everton, who are waiting for around £70 million, but United are trying their best to negotiate the deal.
Meanwhile, the Reds are seriously considering a move for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, who is valued by the Bundesliga club at ‘significantly less’ than the £65 million they paid for him two years ago.
Both players are young, with tons of room to grow, and address different problems that the United backline need to solve. United could make a move for De Ligt, who Ten Hag is still a big fan of, and also await Everton’s decision on Branthwaite.
However, it has also been reported that a second centre-back signing would depend on sales at Old Trafford, with Victor Lindelöf and Harry Maguire both having uncertain futures.
Yet, it is not only within the playing squad where changes are expected to be made.
Ten Hag’s backroom coaching staff will have a shakeup as Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake are expected to join the team.
According to The Athletic, it has been decided that Benni McCarthy will depart the club when his contract expires at the end of the month.
McCarthy joined the Old Trafford club shortly after Ten Hag was appointed in the summer of 2022.
