Manchester United could revive a smart deal that has been needed for years after a meeting involving Dan Ashworth last week.

The Reds have seen many changes at the club since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team took charge earlier this year.

However, it is clear that further changes both on and off the pitch are expected and there were even moves in the summer that didn’t quite materialise.

United could revive Appleton deal

It was reported in the summer that United wanted to bolster their backroom staff by chasing Michael Appleton to become loans manager at the club.

However, a move did not materialise and it appeared that the former United Academy player would find a role elsewhere.

Yet, according to MailSport, Appleton, who is still without a job, was spotted alongside United sporting director and technical director, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox, at Salford City’s stadium last week.

United’s under-21s side were facing German side Hertha Berlin in the Premier League International Cup, with the game ending 1-1.

Appleton’s presence alongside the United chiefs has re-ignited talks about a potential appointment, MailSport adds, with there being a strong possibility that they would have been discussing a potential job for him.

Finally, the report claimed that the 48-year-old may be recruited in a different role at Old Trafford.

Loans manager needed

Further focus on the loans system would be brilliant for United, who have not utilised it well enough in recent years.

Amad Diallo’s stint at Sunderland is one of few examples that have shown how beneficial loans can be, while Elyh Harrison is also having a positive time at Chester FC so far this term.

However, currently, there are several players in the Under-21s who seem ready for spells on loan but have been kept at Carrington for one reason or another.

Added focus on how to maximise the loan system could help the club, especially with the crop of talented youngsters coming through at the moment.
