Manchester United’s race to sign a new striker this summer is heating up, with Rúben Amorim’s side not the only club aiming to secure reinforcements.
Manchester United are aiming to strengthen their forward line this summer after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League and lose in the Europa League final.
Goals were hard to come by, with Bruno Fernandes finishing as top scorer on 19, while Amad and Alejandro Garnacho added 11 each. No player reached the 20-goal mark.
In response, United are turning to the transfer market. Matheus Cunha is set to join in a £62.5 million deal from Wolves, and Bryan Mbeumo has given his approval for a move from Brentford.
Rúben Amorim’s side continue to search for additional attacking options, but one name is now off the table as Liam Delap has completed a move to Chelsea.
United convinced Osimhen to reject Al-Hilal
While the Premier League transfer market has gotten off to a flying start with United, Manchester City, and Liverpool all confirming early signings, Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have been a major player as they look to assemble a super-team before the Club World Cup this month.
After failing to land Mohammed Salah from Liverpool and Fernandes from Amorim’s clutches, they turned to Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who has previously been of significant interest to United, although his wage demands have put the club off.
However, the Nigerian international eventually rejected the Saudi move despite being offered a ridiculously lucrative contract. A fresh report from Tuttosport has now made the rather significant claim that United had a part to play in his decision.
It is reported by Tuttosport that interest from United and their Premier League rivals, Arsenal, “convinced” Osimhen to reject Al-Hilal and remain in Europe.
Previous reports claim that Napoli informed United last month that they would be willing to sell Osimhen to them if Amorim’s club offered Rasmus Højlund and £33 million in return.
United dealt Gyökeres transfer twist
Another player who has been closely linked with a move to Old Trafford is Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres, whom Amorim is said to have kept in contact with across the last six months.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that United have been in contact with the Swede’s camp to stay informed about his situation, but they may be facing significant competition from Juventus.
The Turin side, who are also interested in Osimhen, see Gyökeres as their “dream signing” as per Tuttosport’s report, and as the Sporting striker is favouring Champions League football, they could prove to be a much more attractive destination for Gyökeres.
As per many other reports across the last two months, the 27-year-old’s price tag sits at around £59 million.
