Manchester United contact Michael Carrick alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjær as double-coach plan surfaces

Manchester United have contacted former Red Devil Michael Carrick following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with United in search of a new head coach.

Manchester United made the tough decision to sack Ruben Amorim on Sunday night, following some explosive words from the Portuguese tactician that highlighted entitlement within the club.

The Reds fell short of victory over the weekend, as they drew 1-1 against bitter rivals Leeds United, which left them fifth in the Premier League table.

With United now without a manager, they are being coached by caretaker Darren Fletcher, although it seems as if they will seek an interim to see the season out.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has thrown his hat into the ring for the role, whilst Michael Carrick is also being linked with the role. The Reds have begun talking to external candidates.

United speak to Solskjær and Carrick

Sky Sports News have reported that both Carrick and Solskjær have been spoken to, informally, regarding the possibility of taking over as an interim manager until the end of the season.

The report also states that United are expected to also call other candidates before making any decisions, whilst Fletcher takes charge in the meantime.

It has been stated that United would prefer an interim manager before making a permanent appointment in the summer, although they are reportedly not ruling out a substantive hire if the right coach is available.

The likes of Oliver Glasner, Enzo Maresca, and Thomas Tuchel have all been linked with the role, although only Maresca is currently out of a job.

Meanwhile, the Manchester World have indicated that there is a genuine possibility that both Solskjær and Carrick could be appointed as a coaching pair alongside the former United striker.

Wilcox is leading the conversations

Director of football Jason Wilcox is leading the process for United in terms of assessing the candidates, and he is expected to conduct more formal interviews before making a recommendation.

It is expected that this recommendation will be made in the coming days, although a final decision will need to be sanctioned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

No timescale has been set, though it is reasonable to expect the Reds to want a decision in time for the Manchester derby on January 17.

Fletcher will take charge of tomorrow night’s fixture away to Burnley, and he will potentially also manage the side for their FA Cup bout on Sunday against Brighton.
