Manchester United have reportedly added a “dangerous” Italian striker to their target list this summer, with the player available to sign for £46 million.
Manchester United’s lack of a consistent goal threat remains one of their most pressing concerns heading into the summer.
Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have been the only dependable sources of goals in recent seasons, with Rashford scoring 30 times in the 2022/23 campaign.
But with Rashford expected to leave after his loan spell at Aston Villa, and Fernandes now operating in a deeper role under Rúben Amorim, doubts persist over the strength of United’s forward line.
Rasmus Højlund has shown flashes of potential but still appears too inexperienced to lead the attack on his own. Joshua Zirkzee, meanwhile, tends to thrive in a supporting role rather than as a traditional No. 9.
As the transfer window approaches, United are actively seeking to bolster their attack — with a number of names still being floated as their potential targets this summer.
United add Retegui to striker target list
With United in desperate need of new goals, the club have reportedly added Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui to their list of targets this summer.
This is according to Tottenham Hotspur outlet The Boy Hotspur, who claim that United are looking to rival their Europa League final opponents for the “dangerous” Italian this summer.
Retegui has enjoyed a stunning season in Italy. The 26-year-old has notched 28 goals and provided eight assists in 48 appearances for Gian Gasperini’s side. The club finished firmly in third place and is set to play in the Champions League next campaign.
With United, Spurs, and Arsenal having all followed the player’s fantastic performances as a lone striker this season, it is claimed by The Boy Hotspur that Atalanta would be willing to part ways with Retegui for around £46-50 million this summer.
With United’s scouts said to have a positive view of the player, he is now on the club’s striker target list alongside Viktor Gyökeres, Benjamin Sesko, Liam Delap, and Victor Osimhen.
United need experience up front this summer
While United look set to secure Delap in the next month, should they qualify for the Champions League next season, there is certainly a case to be made that the club should also try to bring in a more experienced striker to help lead the line.
With 22-year-old Højlund and 23-year-old Zirkzee each looking uncomfortable holding down the starting striker position under Amorim, it may be worth bringing in a more seasoned striker to shoulder the burden.
At 26, Retegui would be a good option for United in the positon, although with his price tag only a little lower than that of Gyökeres who is available for £58.5 million this summer, it may be worth United pushing to sign the Swede instead.
Reports from earlier this week detailed that United were back in the running for the Sporting CP star amid his 52 goals this campaign, with Amorim himself pushing for the deal.
As Gyökeres is already very familiar with the ways of Amorim’s 3-4-3, having scored over 60 goals for the Portuguese head coach in just under 70 appearances while at Sporting, the 26-year-old Swede may be United’s best bet if they want to buy instant experience.
