Manchester United “adamant” that academy starlet can solidify place this season, Erik ten Hag plans to reward him
According to a new report, Manchester United believe Toby Collyer could replicate Kobbie Mainoo’s rise from youth prospect to first-team stalwart.
Collyer, 20, made his Premier League debut last weekend, playing 45 minutes against Liverpool, after being introduced as a half-time substitute for Casemiro.
The young Englishman also picked up minutes during the Community Shield against rivals Manchester City, replacing Mainoo to become the Red Devils’ 251st academy graduate to play for the first team.
Having started to accumulate minutes in Erik ten Hag‘s first team squad, a report from GIVEMESPORT has revealed that sources within the club believe Collyer will be able to cement his place in the United team.
GIVEMESPORT’s report notes that Ten Hag intends to reward Collyer with more minutes in the first team, after impressing against Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as in pre-season.
The report specifically states that people within the club are “adamant” that Collyer will be able to mirror Kobbie Mainoo’s monumental rise last season.
Like Mainoo before him, Collyer has spent time in Manchester United’s youth setup, joining the Red Devils’ academy system in March of 2022.
Following the exit of fellow academy graduate Scott McTominay in the summer window, Ten Hag is now expected to turn to Collyer with some frequency going forward.
This was shown as recently as Collyer’s Premier League debut against Liverpool, where the young Englishman was chosen ahead of Christian Eriksen as a replacement for Casemiro.
It was also noted in the report that despite the recent signing of Manuel Ugarte, several key figures within the club believe Collyer will be able to repay Ten Hag’s faith in him if given the chance.
