Manchester City deliver fresh blow for Manchester United in transfer chase for “superb” star

Manchester United do not have much time left in the January transfer window to complete the business they want to.

With a week remaining in the January transfer window, Manchester United’s only activity so far has been the loan departure of Antony and several youth team stars.

Ruben Amorim is in desperate need of at least one signing this month, particularly in the wingback position.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have shown that they do not have the offensive skillset to excel in the role while Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are not trusted due to fitness issues.

Patrick Dorgu has become the main target for United this month, with the 20-year-old Lecce star being a great option to play as an attacking wingback for Amorim.

United have already seen two bids rejected for the player from the Italian club and they have been preparing a third proposal to hopefully get a deal over the line.

However, there may be complications in the coming days if Manchester City decide to make another signing this window.

Juventus preparing potential hijack for Dorgu

According to a report from Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Reds could see competition for Dorgu from Serie A giants Juventus.

It was claimed that Juventus have made significant moves in the last few hours to prepare a potential move for Dorgu.

Andrea Cambiaso is being targeted by Pep Guardiola’s side this month and if they manage to sign the Juventus fullback, it appears that the Italian club have identified Dorgu as the replacement.

For United, this would make a deal for Dorgu much more complicated as they are trying to secure a deal for the Danish international underneath Lecce’s £34 million valuation.

With limited funds, the Reds are in no position to get into a bidding war and so their chances of the signing may fade if this occurs.

United must be cautious in transfer market

We also have to acknowledge the games played within the Italian press when transfers are concerned. Last week, it was Napoli who were challenging United for the 20-year-old’s signature and those links have since gone quiet.

Lecce appear desperate to get as much as possible for a player described as “superb” and with a lot of potential. However, United cannot be taken advantage of in the transfer market yet again.

“We have to be cautious,” explained Amorim on the weekend. “The rules here and you know that we have to follow the rules, we have made mistakes in the past and we cannot do it now.

“We are focused on improving the team, but let’s see. Let’s focus on the players that we have and the next game.”
