Manchester United will “probably” sign £50m star under Rúben Amorim, says club legend
Dimitar Berbatov has revealed that he feels Manchester United will “probably” sign a £60 million star under Rúben Amorim’s leadership.
After a 2024 transfer window that saw Manchester United spend a net of just over £100 million under Erik ten Hag, the appointment of Rúben Amorim will pivot the club’s recruitment process.
Although Amorim does not have the same bonafide transfer veto that Ten Hag possessed before he was relieved from his duties, United will likely only sign players who fit the Portuguese head coach’s vision for his squad.

Amorim’s Sporting side plays a drastically different style of football than the system Ten Hag employed at Old Trafford. Amorim often favours a 3-4-2-1 formation that releases attacking full-backs and two inside No. 10s.
His system often relies on a powerful, fast striker, which many have pinned Rasmus Højlund to become, but former United star Dimitar Berbatov has explained that a transfer “probably” will happen.
United’s 2025 transfer window
One man that Berbatov feels United will likely sign is Rúben Amorim’s brilliant striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has scored 20 goals in his opening 16 games for Sporting this season.
The former Bulgarian international explained that he feels it is a move that will probably go through due to the special connection Gyokeres and Amorim share.
“I think there is a special connection with the coach so maybe we probably are going to see him in a United shirt,” Berbatov said.
When asked if he would welcome the signing, he added, “From what he is showing right now, I think yes.
“Our strikers at the moment are not producing and scoring goals. We’re 18th in the league [for goals scored so far this season] which is embarrassing for a stature of club like United.
“So this is a position that I would like to see improvement.”
Gyokeres replies to interest
Last week, the Swedish international was questioned on links to United, explaining that although he is happy at Sporting, he does not know where his future lies.
Sky Germany have reported that although Gyökeres has a release clause of around £84 million, the Portuguese club may be willing to sell him for a fee of between £42-50 million. However, this will depend on the demand for his signature in the summer.
“Going with Amorim to Manchester United? I don’t know,” Gyokeres explained when asked about possibly joining Amorim at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
“I’m here. As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting.
“It’s nothing I really think about. I’m sad about him [Amorim] leaving. We wish him all the best.”
