Fabrizio Romano: Viktor Gyökeres’ Manchester United January transfer chances explained with “behind the scenes” update
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the chances of Viktor Gyökeres signing for Manchester United in January with an update on the work being done “behind the scenes.”
With Rúben Amorim joining Manchester United as the club’s new head coach, many have been speculating who the 39-year-old Portuguese boss will want to sign.
Although reports explain that Amorim will not have as much transfer power as Erik ten Hag, with the club’s recruitment team taking the lead on which players will be signed, it is thought that he will still have a significant say.

Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system is a drastic change from the style of football that United have traditionally employed, meaning that gaps in the squad must be filled for this to be achieved.
Reports have already stated that Amorim has asked sporting director Dan Ashworth that the club must sign players with “intensity”, and fans have pointed to several players in his previous Sporting CP team that fit the bill.
Viktor Gyökeres to Manchester United
One of those is Swedish striker Victor Gyökeres, who has emerged as one of the most lethal strikers in Europe under Amorim’s coaching. Many fans feel that the 26-year-old may end up at Old Trafford in 2025, although transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has cleared up the chances of this happening in January.
“The feeling at Sporting is that Viktor Gyökeres can complete the season at the club and then decide his future destination in summer 2025,” Romano explained on his YouTube channel.
“For sure, we expect Viktor Gyökeres to leave Sporting in 2025, should be in the summer, so this is the idea.
“Amorim has been honest, he is not planning to go for Gyökeres in the January transfer window, also, because he doesn’t want to break the relationship with the club, the relationship with the Sporting fans. So going for Viktor Gyökeres in January would mean creating a problem, an issue to the relationship.”
However, Romano admitted that this may change in the summer, with the Italian journalist highlighting the ‘behind the scenes work’ being done on a possible deal.
“In the summer, it could be completely different for any club. There are many clubs interested in Gyökeres, guys. So I’m not going to come here and tell you nine clubs interested in Gyökeres.
“As soon as there will be something concrete, I will let you know which club is pushing for Viktor Gyökeres. But the interest is obviously there, and many clubs are starting to work behind the scenes on the Viktor Gyökeres story for 2025.”
Romano concluded: “Man United, in January, are not planning to break the relationship with Sporting, especially because this is something wanted by Ruben Amorim for Gyökeres.”
Amorim’s Gyökeres admission
Amorim himself recently admitted that he cannot even joke about bringing Gyökeres with him to Old Trafford in January as he would get in trouble. He also explained that he wants to respect his former club, and will not engage in any transfer dealings with Sporting this season.
“If I start joking about this Gyokeres situation, I’ll get in trouble,” Amorim told Portuguese outlet A Bola.
“This is my city, this is my country, so I’ll respect it. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life will probably go somewhere else.”
