Manchester United are looking into signing new defenders this summer, with Erik ten Hag hoping for at least two new reinforcements.

Following a season that saw Manchester United concede over 80 goals for the first time this century, it has become painfully obvious that major signings are needed under Erik ten Hag.

Granted, the club suffered an unprecedented injury crisis throughout the campaign, reaching the point where Casemiro had to fill in as an auxiliary centre-back for a sustained period towards the end of the season, but it was still a dire showing.

With this in mind, the side want two new centre-backs following Raphaël Varane’s departure. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, and Jonny Evans’ futures are still unclear, prompting a hunt for new talent.

Although the strongest links have been to Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Lille’s Leny Yoro, another name that has been “revealed and confirmed” is Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.

This is according to the German transfer specialist Florian Plettenberg. “Understand Matthijs de Ligt remains a transfer target for Manchester United this summer as revealed and confirmed again,” he wrote on Thursday morning.

Further, Plettenberg detailed how the Dutch international is one of many names being discussed at Old Trafford alongside Branthwaite and Yoro and that Ten Hag is a “great admirer” of the 24-year-old.

Although he signed for Bayern just two years ago, he is said to be able to leave for a “suitable offer,” but one has yet to be made by United. Plettenberg also noted that concrete talks between the player and Bayern are set to take place once the 2024 European Championships are over.

According to the report, United value De Ligt at around £43 million, but there is no mention of what Bayern would demand for his transfer.
