According to Italian media, Manchester United have finally ‘dropped out’ of the race to sign a defensive midfielder this summer despite the Scott McTominay agreement.

After their hefty £139 million expenditure on Joshua ZirkzeeLeny YoroMatthijs de Ligt, and Noussair MazraouiManchester United, Manchester United are now looking to recoup some funds through player sales.

The club have already raised over £60 million from offloading Aaron Wan-BissakaMason GreenwoodWilly Kambwala, among others.

With the transfer window set to close next Thursday, United continue to explore the market for additional sales. Simultaneously, they are seeking to strengthen their midfield before the 30 August deadline, with PSG’s Manuel Ugarte identified as a key target.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ugarte is actively trying to facilitate his move to Old Trafford.

However, before this, United had Sofyan Amrabat in this squad on loan from Fiorentina, and it was initially expected that his move would become permanent for a fee of £20 million.

However, according to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness, Amrabat will not return to Old Trafford this summer.

The report states that Fiorentina asked for around £12-13 million for the Morocco international, but the Red Devils “will not satisfy” these demands, considering how his loan panned out.

Scott McTominay looks set to complete a transfer to Napoli for a fee of around £25 million in the coming days, and there have been reports that United will look to sign another midfielder alongside Ugarte if funds allow.

However, as per the aforementioned report, this will not be Sofyan Amrabat. It has been well documented that 28-year-old wanted to return to Old Trafford, and that Ten Hag would be happy to have him back at the right price, but by all accounts, the club have pulled out of the race.
