Manchester United “accelerating” transfer for £55m star Rúben Amorim sees as his “ideal” signing
Manchester United are reportedly picking up the pace with negotiations for a Nuno Mendes as Rúben Amorim sees him as an “ideal” signing to add to his squad.
Manchester United are reportedly planning to make a move for Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes in 2025, as Rúben Amorim looks to resolve the defensive problems that have hampered his team this season.
Under Amorim, United have struggled to find stability at the back, with set-piece defending emerging as a significant weakness. Strengthening the defence in the upcoming transfer window has become a pressing need.
The left-back position has been a particular area of concern for United over the years. Luke Shaw, their long-serving first-choice, has been plagued by injuries ever since his horrific leg break in a Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.
Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s understudy, only recently returned to fitness after a gruelling 17-month recovery from a severe knee injury that required multiple operations.
In their absence, Diogo Dalot has stepped in to cover the left-back role. However, Amorim has admitted that Dalot is far better suited to his natural position on the right flank, highlighting the need for reinforcements on the left.
United accelerating their move for Mendes
According to a new report from CaughtOffside, United are “determined to accelerate” their pursuit of Mendes and have engaged in active talks over a possible deal for the player.
However, it’s also stated that PSG may look to demand as much as £55 million for the 22-year-old this summer despite the player having just one year left on his current contract, which the Ligue 1 side are keen to renew.
The report explains that, given the aforementioned reasons about his current options at left wing-back, Amorim sees Mendes as an “ideal” signing at United.
The pair have worked together before, with Mendes having made his professional debut under Amorim at Sporting CP and playing 47 times for the Portuguese manager before Mendes’ move to France in 2021.
United facing competition from key rivals
Unfortunately for Amorim, United are not the only club in for Mendes across 2025.
Real Madrid have been touted as a club who have started looking at the player as a potential option after reports indicated that target Alphonso Davies is increasingly likely to renew his deal with Bayern Munich.
It’s also said that Manchester City has registered interest in the player, with the Premier League outfit “monitoring” the situation.
Pep Guardiola recently confirmed that club captain and right-back Kyle Walker had asked to leave the club, meaning that City will no doubt be looking for fresh options in defence.
City do not have a recognised left-back in their current first-team squad, with academy player Josh Wilson-Esbrand technically the most senior in the position.
