Club president provides Manchester United with two offers for young star – one makes no sense

Manchester United have had two proposals submitted from Lazio at the same time, but one of them makes no sense and will likely be rejected.

Manchester United are set to sell multiple high-level talents this summer, and INEOS are looking to raise as much as possible from sales to secure new Old Trafford incomings over the next few months.

Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are top priorities on the sale list, but it is becoming likely that others, such as Casemiro and Victor Lindelöf, will also leave this summer. UtdDistrict also understands that the club are open to let Scott McTominay leave.

With the 2024 Copa America and European Championship tournaments underway this month, the club are targeting those players who were not called up to their national squads, such as Jarrad Branthwaite, while also entering negotiations for multiple sales.

Mason Greenwood has been subject to interest across Europe following his positive performances for La Liga side Getafe in the last 12 months, with Juventus tipped as the destination of choice for the 22-year-old.

However, according to Il Messaggero, Lazio have now entered the chase for his signature in the summer, with their club president, Claudio Lotito, having a “summit” in Manchester with the club and putting forward two proposals.

The first is an initial bid of just over £15 million with a further 50% sell-on clause, meaning United would get 50% of the proceeds should Lazio choose to sell him in the future.

However, with United demanding around £35-40 million, Lazio would have to sell Greenwood for at least £45 million for United to achieve this overall valuation, which may be too risky. Beyond this, INEOS want the money as soon as possible, meaning this will likely be rejected.

However, it is the second proposal that seems more ridiculous and will almost certainly be rejected. With the bid of £15 million still on the table, instead of a further option of a 50% sell-on clause, Lotito also offered 22-year-old goalkeeper Chrīstos Mandas as part of the deal.

Mandas is said to be deemed to hold a market price of around £15 million, meaning the overall deal would have a total value of about £30 million. This is still short of United’s mark, but the idea that United would want another goalkeeper is bizarre.

United signed André Onana and Altay Bayındır last summer and may offer third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton a new contract, so adding a fourth to their roster makes little sense.

If Lazio want to offer a part-cash-part-player exchange for Greenwood, they must add a player from a different position that is of higher value.
