Manchester United have found Viktor Gyökeres alternative that Jason Wilcox really likes as possible transfer discount emerges

Manchester United’s search for a striker is entering a crucial phase, with options being carefully considered.

Since joining Sporting CP from Coventry City in July 2023, Viktor Gyökeres has been in exceptional form, scoring 85 goals in 92 appearances.

In the 2024/2025 season, Gyökeres showcased his goal-scoring ability by netting 36 goals in all competitions for Rúben Amorim’s former club.

However, his release clause of approximately £60 million and significant wage demands present financial challenges for United.

At 27 years old, Gyökeres also may not align with United’s strategy of investing in younger talent for long-term development. Consequently, United are exploring alternative options to strengthen their attacking lineup.

Wilcox eyeing Premier Legaue striker he likes

Manchester United’s recruitment strategy is heavily influenced by the expertise of their technical director, Jason Wilcox.

According to The Athletic, Wilcox, with his experience in youth development, has a strong connection to one player in particular: Liam Delap.

The 22-year-old striker, currently impressing at Ipswich Town, has been on United’s radar for some time, and Wilcox’s previous work with him at Manchester City’s academy could play a pivotal role in bringing him to Old Trafford, with the Old Trafford director a fan of the player.

With United looking for a more affordable striker option, Delap could be a more feasible alternative to Gyökeres. The above report states that, with Ipswich likely to go down, United see this as a chance to prize a good future talent at a discounted rate.

The 22-year-old has impressed at Ipswich Town, scoring ten goals and providing two assists in the Premier League this season.

Delap’s potential has caught the eye of United’s technical director Wilcox, who worked closely with him during his time at Manchester City’s academy.

This connection between Wilcox and Delap could be crucial in United’s pursuit of the young forward, especially given the club’s focus on developing talent for the future.

Is Delap the right choice for United?

When it comes to signing a new striker, United’s priorities are clear: They need someone who will not only provide immediate competition for Rasmus Højlund but also offer long-term potential.

The prospect of signing Gyökeres has been overshadowed by his high transfer fee and wage demands, making him a less attractive option.

Instead, Delap presents a more financially feasible and age-appropriate solution, fitting United’s vision for sustainable growth.

While Delap is still developing and has yet to prove himself at the highest level, his potential is undeniable.

His link to Wilcox adds another layer of confidence, as the technical director’s endorsement could carry significant weight in United’s decision-making process.

The 22-year-old may not offer the same immediate star power as a more established striker, but his ability to grow into a key player could provide United with the long-term solution they need.
