Anderlecht manager Brian Riemer has confirmed that the club are looking to sign a Manchester United star by comparing him to a deadline day deal last summer.

Manchester United are looking to offload multiple players this summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his new-look Old Trafford staff aim to raise as much cash as possible to fund new incomings this summer.

After signing Joshua Zirkzee for £36 million and Leny Yoro for a further £52 million, United are looking to continue their sale momentum following the sales of Mason Greenwood (£23 million initial fee), Willy Kambwala (£10 million) and others.

Multiple high earners have also departed Old Trafford following the expiry of their contracts, with Raphaël Varane and Anthony Martial’s exits getting more than £2 million a month in wage bills.

Anderlecht manager Brian Riemer has now hinted that he would like to try and pull off the signing of Christian Eriksen this summer, comparing the deal to when the Belgian club signed Thorgan Hazard on deadline day in 2023.

“Look, we are always looking for good players. Connections can mean something. But transfer periods are strange things,” Riemer told DH Net.

“Last year, nobody could have expected Thorgan Hazard to be here until it happened on the last day. Just like with [Kasper] Schmeichel. Doors open and close quickly.

“I know Christian Eriksen well, yes. We worked together at Brentford three years ago, and I still exchange messages with Christian regularly. I know that he is now at a training camp in LA with Man United, so I can confirm that he is not in Brussels!

“In general, I can say that Jesper Fredberg and the scouting are working day and night to get reinforcements, but it is not the case that you can just grab players off the shelf.

“It sometimes takes time to massage certain targets. At the end of the window, there is sometimes an opportunity like last season with Thorgan Hazard.”

However, Eriksen himself explained earlier this week that he is happy in Manchester and currently does not see himself leaving before the end of his current contract.

“I want to play as long as possible,” the veteran Dane told reporters when asked about his future plans while in the USA.

“Now, I would say yes (to continue at an elite level), but in three years’ time, my mindset may be different, so that could be in the park or anywhere. There is a time and a place (for less game time), and I am not getting younger, but it doesn’t feel like I’m not getting younger.

“Mentally, I am still the same, but body-wise, in terms of games and how we play, sometimes it is good to have a rest, to be able to perform to 100%. I have one year left, so for me, I am a United player and for the last year as well.

“I haven’t been told [to] leave or [about an] extension. I feel good, my family is feeling good living in Manchester, and United is a nice club.”
