Angel Gomes responds as Rúben Amorim issues ‘green light’ for Manchester United to sign him
Rúben Amorim has reportedly given Manchester United the “green light” to resign former Academy star Angel Gomes this summer.
Manchester United are shaping their 2025 transfer plans under new head coach Rúben Amorim.
Amorim stepped in after Erik ten Hag departed, leaving the team 14th in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League, despite a summer expenditure exceeding £200 million.

Going forward, United are expected to operate on a tighter budget, emphasizing Amorim’s ability to enhance the existing squad.
While January signings are unlikely, preparations for summer reinforcements are underway, with multiple departures expected to generate funds for new arrivals.
Green light for Gomes
According to CaughtOffside, Rúben Amorim has already identified Lille midfielder Angel Gomes as someone who could be a useful asset for the current squad.
Gomes, who was at United’s academy and played ten times for the side before leaving, has been impressing in Europe, and Amorim has given United the “green light” to seal his return.
However, with Gomes’ contract expiring in 2025, United are not the only team interested, with others in the Premier League keeping tabs on the player.
Arsenal and Chelsea have also reportedly monitoring Gomes, while Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle are interested. European giants Atletico Madrid and Napoli have been credited with interest.
Gomes responds
Regarding the 24-year-old’s thoughts on his next destination, CaughtOffside claim that he would favour a move back to United over other Premier League sides.
It is said that he wants a three-year contract at Old Trafford plus the option to extend for a further season, which is a common clause United insert into their player’s contracts to retain their value.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Gomes said last year when asked about his departure from Old Trafford. “In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career.
“I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn’t be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille’s then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that’s what convinced me to move – the faith Lille had in me.
“Do I imagine myself coming back one day? It’s home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
