“Bad news…” Rúben Amorim handed Manchester United transfer blow in key target U-turn

Rúben Amorim has been handed “bad news” as one Manchester United transfer target produces a potential U-turn on his summer window status.

Rúben Amorim has struggled to stabilise Manchester United’s backline since taking charge, with set-piece vulnerabilities being a glaring issue. Reinforcements in defence are expected to be a key focus in the transfer windows across 2025.

The left-back position has long been problematic for the club. Luke Shaw, their regular choice for years, has dealt with recurring injuries, including a horrific double leg fracture during a Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s understudy, has also faced setbacks, recently returning after a gruelling 17-month recovery from a severe knee injury that required multiple operations.

During their absences, Diogo Dalot has covered the left-back role, but Amorim has admitted that Dalot is far more effective in his natural position on the right-hand side of the defence.

United is said to be scouting several potential options in the position, ideally looking to bring in cover at left-back within the next few weeks.

United dealt “bad news” blow in Davies pursuit

One of the targets United have been closely linked to is Alphonso Davies, with the fact the player would be able to sign on a free transfer desirable for the club, and Amorim is said to be a fan of the player.

However, United have not been the only club to register their interest, with Real Madrid said to be keen on bringing in the 24-year-old full-back as his contract with Bayern Munich is set to expire in June this year.

However, according to the German transfer guru Christian Falk, United have been dealt “bad news” as Davies is now in talks to extend his contract.

previously, it was thought that Davies was actively looking to leave with the situation unresolvable last year, but in a U-turn, he is now open to staying in the Bundesliga.

It is claimed that the chiefs at Bayern Munich are now confident that Davies will put pen to paper on a new contract.

United are looking at multiple left-backs this summer

Fortunately for United, Davies is not the only player they are looking at in the position.

They have been closely linked with Benfica’s Alvaro Fernandez, who left Old Trafford for Portugal last year, but United inserted a buy-back clause in his deal that allows them to re-sign the young left-back for around £16 million.

They have also been credited with an interest in Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, who has taken the Premier League by storm and recently switched agencies ahead of a potential summer move.

They have reportedly added Denmark international Patrick Dorgu to the list of options, with the 20-year-old Lecce player impressing in Serie A.

Finally, the club are thought to be keen on bringing in Paris St. Germain’s Nuno Mendes, who played 47 times under Amorim during their time together at Sporting CP.

However, the Ligue 1 side are reportedly demanding around £58 million for the 22-year-old as they are keen to keep him at the club and sign a new long-term contract.
