“Don’t underestimate…” – Man Utd star Lisandro Martínez responds to controversial Kylian Mbappe claim
Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martínez has responded to a controversial claim from Real Madrid’s new star, Kylian Mbappe.
Martínez, 25, had a disappointing campaign with United last term, which was filled with injuries, but he ended it with victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
The defender is now fully focused on the upcoming Copa America tournament with Argentina but has been asked about Kylian Mbappe’s controversial comments on international football.
The new Real Madrid man has explained that he believes the European Championships are more challenging than the World Cup because of the consistent quality of the teams involved.
“Argentina and Brazil do not play high-level matches to reach the World Cup,” he added. “In South America, football is not as advanced as in Europe. And that is why when you look at the last World Cups, it is always the Europeans who win.”
This has understandably caused some outrage in South America, and Martínez was asked about the Frenchman’s comments while on international duty.
“I will leave his opinion to him. I have a different opinion. I just don’t underestimate… all competitions are difficult to win,” the United defender said.
“The key to this group is the humility they have. We know what we have won and how important it is, but we are still hungry, and we want to keep winning.
“The important thing is to keep our feet on the ground, which is what characterises us. We go game by game, and we know the importance and what this shield represents.”
Of course, Martínez and his team will once again have Lionel Messi leading them into an international tournament after their World Cup win in 2022. Martínez is excited to be linking up with the footballing legend once again.
“Our expectation is to win this Copa América. Leo (Messi) is very important for us. Having him for us without a doubt is a plus,” he added. “We are very happy to share everyday life with him.
“It’s a beautiful thing to be here with him. We have a very good relationship between all of us, and when one is here, he is very happy. We feel at home. We see Leo very happy and with an impressive level.”
