Lisandro Martínez is ‘very proud’ of Man United teammate who could push for new contract
Lisandro Martínez is ‘very proud’ of one Manchester United teammate following the 2023/24 campaign.
The Reds ended the season with FA Cup glory, winning the Wembley final 2-1 against Manchester City.
It was a necessary victory following a painful Premier League campaign, which saw Erik ten Hag’s side finish in eighth position. They were also knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage.
Alejandro Garnacho was one bright spark across the season. He started the joint-most games of any player at Old Trafford while also contributing to important moments.
He scored the opening goal in the FA Cup final after pouncing on a mistake from Josko Gvardiol. It has been his first season as a consistent starter.
Martínez has not been able to have a similar impact due to injuries, however, he offered his praise to Garnacho after the FA Cup final.
“He has enormous talent,” Martinez smiled when asked about his fellow Argentine. “And he has to believe, like in the (first) goal, where he thought there was going to be a rival mistake.
“He himself caused Gvardiol’s mistake. That is the result of when you try your hardest. The truth is that I am very proud of him because he has worked hard every day, especially at his age.
“He’s a great boy. Now, we have to help him, guide him and be with him at all times.”
Garnacho could be heading with Martínez to Copa America with Argentina after his impressive season with United.
A recent report from the Daily Mail explained that the 19-year-old may well look for a new contract if he features prominently at the international competition this summer.
Despite having signed a new long-term deal last summer, the report added that it would not be a surprise to see his representatives knocking on the door for improved terms if he impresses for Argentina.
