“Very good chance…” David Ornstein reveals Rúben Amorim’s main focus during Manchester United’s January window
David Ornstein has explained Rúben Amorim’s likely main focus as Manchester United prepare for the January transfer window.
Rúben Amorim has been appointed as Manchester United‘s head coach, replacing Erik ten Hag, who left the club in turmoil.
Ten Hag was dismissed late last month after a disastrous start to the season that saw United slip to 14th in the Premier League and 21st in their Europa League group, falling well short of expectations.

Despite his appointment, Amorim has not yet managed a game for United due to complexities surrounding his release clause. His first match in charge is scheduled for Sunday, 24 November, when United travel to face Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
In the interim, Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped in as caretaker manager, overseeing three wins and a draw. However, he departed to make way for the backroom team that Amorim has brought with him to Carrington.
Man United transfer latest
Famed football journalist David Ornstein has provided United fans with the latest on the club’s approach to the January window. Despite reports that the club may look to sign players on loan in the coming months, Ornstein has explained that he feels the window will be low-key.
“It’s never been a massive window for Manchester United or many Premier League clubs to spend,” Ornstein began, speaking to Sky Sports News. “They normally focus on the summer.
“Manchester United have signed over the last few years, on average, about five players per summer, and I suspect they’ll invest again when it comes to that window. But right now Manchester United are cutting it fine on financial fair play, profitability, and sustainability.
“So the money just isn’t really there. They’ve made cutbacks across the board, including an ambassadorial role for Sir Alex Ferguson. They’re even looking at the allocation of finances that they give to the Disabled Supporters Association.”
Amorim’s real focus
Speaking further, Ornstein explained that rather than transfers, Amorim is more likely to focus on improving his current set of players, but does give credence to the rumour that Antony may be set to leave.
“So when it comes to transfer spending, it doesn’t surprise me,” Ornstein continued. “Manchester United have invested heavily. There are a lot of good players there who they can get improved performances out of.
“Rúben Amorim is renowned for improving players, and so he’ll try and work with those at his disposal. Maybe they can do a little bit in the market. Maybe some players will have to leave.
“I think Jeremy Cross (journalist) pointed out maybe Antony could be on his way out to the club, and that could free up some finances, but I think it will be a low-key January at Old Trafford and Rúben Amorim.
“I think there’s a very good chance he will show through his coaching what he’s capable of and then they’ll build in time using the markets too.”
