Two Manchester United players have been touted as those who could suffer as Rúben Amorim joins Old Trafford as the club’s new head coach.

Manchester United have appointed Ruben Amorim as their new Head Coach following the departure of Erik ten Hag from Old Trafford.

After receiving a contract extension in the summer, Ten Hag’s struggles this season left United in 14th place in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League.

The Dutchman’s exit was confirmed on Monday morning, and United quickly moved to bring in Amorim as his successor.

Amorim will officially step into the role on 11 November as the international break begins, with his first match in charge set for 24 November, away to Ipswich Town.

Two players to suffer

With Amorim joining, many are eager to see the type of system he will employ at the club, considering that the Portuguese boss often favours a more radical three-centre-back system.

Rene Meulensteen, who was an assistant coach at United under Sir Alex Ferguson, has admitted that he feels although the change may be good for Harry Maguire, both Christian Eriksen and Casemiro may suffer as a result.

“I think this could be a big chance for Harry Maguire,” Meulensteen explained to Betway. “I am not sure if Amorim sticks with that 3-4-3 formation, he plays at Sporting, though.

“It could benefit players; there are a number of centre-backs that are used to playing in a back three, whether it is [Lisandro] Martínez alongside [Matthijs] De Ligt and maybe the young [Leny] Yoro when he gets fit. Or maybe Maguire fits in there as well.

“In the midfield, you would think that maybe Casemiro and [Christian] Eriksen would lose out because, obviously, you need energy and, as well as that, the ability to find the passes between the lines and in the pockets.

“However, this system may see all players struggle in certain positions because it is something different from what Ten Hag was playing, who was opting more for a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 so it is interesting to see how he could go about that with this group of players.”

Once Amorim joins United on 11 November, he will have two weeks at Carrington before the squad travel to face Ipswich away from home in his first game at the club.

Although multiple key players will be away on international duty, Amorim will have full access to previous training footage, some players will remain at Carrington, and he will be able to pick the brains of the current coaching staff at United, particularly current interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy to gather a comprehensive assessment of his new team.
