“I cannot…” Enzo Maresca and Pep Guardiola react to Manchester United’s Rúben Amorim appointment
Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola have reacted to Manchester United’s appointment of Rúben Amorim as their new head coach.
Manchester United have named Rúben Amorim as their new Head Coach after parting ways with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Despite a summer contract extension, ten Hag’s tenure faltered this season, leaving United in 14th place in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League.

His departure was confirmed on Monday morning, prompting United to swiftly appoint Amorim as the new leader on the touchline.
Amorim will step into his role on 11 November as the international break commences, meaning his first fixture in charge will be on 24 November, away against Ipswich Town.
Pep Guardiola’s reaction
Following United’s announcement on Friday lunchtime, Man City manager Pep Guardiola was asked about Amorim. He congratulated the Portuguese manager on his appointment but refused to give any advice.
“Welcome to United, to England, and I congratulate him next Tuesday. We faced each other two or three seasons ago in the Champions League, so yeah, welcome.”
Continued, Pep said: “No advices. I’m not the right person to give advice to colleagues. Not because he’s United, I think they have a lot of people in United that will tell him the situation in the club, so I cannot give him advice.”
The pair will face off next week as City travel to Portugal to face Amorim’s Sporting CP side.
Enzo Maresca’s reaction
United are set to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon following their thumping 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.
Speaking on Friday, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was asked for his reaction to Amorim’s appointment, to which he gave a fairly blunt reply.
“All the best to him,” Maresca said. “If the people in charge took that decision, they think it’s the correct one. All the best to him and Man United.”
Although Amorim will become the new head coach, it will be Ruud van Nistelrooy who takes charge of the side at Old Trafford.
