6 chances created, 70 touches – Manchester United star proved himself for Rúben Amorim alongside Amad Diallo vs PAOK
Amad Diallo’s performance against PAOK was spectacular, but another Manchester United man’s talents were on full display for Rúben Amorim.
Manchester United earned their first Europa League win of the season, defeating PAOK 2-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a brilliant double from Amad Diallo on Thursday evening.
The first half was a cagey affair, with Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro, and Rasmus Højlund all having glimpses of goal but failing to convert.
The game sprang to life in the second half when Diallo broke the deadlock, rising to meet a precise Bruno Fernandes cross and directing a looping header into the net to give United a crucial lead.
Diallo sealed the victory 15 minutes later with a moment of magic. He shrugged off Abdul Baba to win the ball, then cut inside on his left foot and unleashed a beautiful curling shot beyond the reach of Dominik Kotarski, clinching all three points for United.
Bruno Fernandes was fantastic
While Amad stole the show, Fernandes must be credited with his quiet but brilliant game against PAOK at Old Trafford.
The Manchester United skipper assisted Amad’s opener, his fourth goal involvement in three games, and was a brilliant dictator throughout the tie.
Against PAOK, he created a total of six chances and had two shots on goal himself, having six touches in the opposition box and passing the ball into United’s final third on eight occasions.
After a poor start to the season, which led to the 30-year-old receiving plenty of criticism, he is starting to once again prove himself in a United shirt, which will be fantastic news for new head coach Rúben Amorim.
Fernandes under Amorim
A key issue Amorim must solve once he arrives at Carrington will be figuring out the best way to get Fernandes back to the level of form that United fans have seen so consistently across the last five seasons at Old Trafford.
The 39-year-old will be well aware of the club captain’s talents, with both coach and manager being Portuguese and making a name for themselves at Sporting CP. Still, with Fernandes now hitting the peak years of his career, it is essential to get him playing again.
In the last few weeks, Fernandes has proved that he is still the brilliant player many know he can be. He has shown Amorim that he still has plenty to give, and should he fit into the new coach’s fresh style, the next chapter at Old Trafford could be Fernandes’ best yet.
