Matej Kovar was a star in Manchester United’s academy, where he played over 50 games for the club’s U21 side in the Premier League 2 during his time.

Although he never made an official first-team appearance at Manchester United, he did impress fans during pre-season last summer before securing a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen for a transfer fee of up to £7.7 million.

With Erik ten Hag signing both André Onana and Altay Bayındır last summer, there was no room for Kovar to force his way into the first-team squad.

Speaking to Czech outlet Sport, the 23-year-old explained that he has not had any contact with United since his move in the summer.

“No, I have not (had any contact with United),” he said, choosing instead to focus his answer on his desire to play more.

“It is important for me to start playing regularly and establish a position in Leverkusen. Then, we will see what happens in the future.”

Kovar did, however, explain that United are still a club, refusing to rule out a return one day when asked.

“Of course, (Man United) is still in my heart. I spent many years at the club. United are going through a difficult season. The results are like a merry-go-round.”

“But it’s a big and great club. I hope it gets back to the top.”
