Manchester United are looking likely to confirm the signing of Leny Yoro from Lille for a fee of up to £55 million despite interest from Real Madrid.

Manchester United are determined to strengthen their defence by signing multiple centre-backs this summer after a tough season under Erik ten Hag, which left them eighth in the Premier League and out of the Champions League by Christmas.

The team conceded over eighty goals in all competitions, frequently changing their defensive lineup due to injuries, resulting in more than 30 different combinations across 52 matches in the 2023/24 season.

INEOS are evaluating potential signings for the 2024 summer transfer window, and Lille centre-back Leny Yoro emerged as their priority target.

Although the player initially wanted to sign for Real Madrid, according to The Athletic, Yoro has warmed to the idea of signing for Manchester United.

This is in part due to the fact that Madrid showed no indication of matching the bid that United had accepted by Lille last Tuesday, with the Ligue 1 side strongly favouring the deal that United had submitted.

It is claimed that Madrid’s only bid was around £17 million, with a further £8.6 million in add-ons.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United and Yoro met a few days ago. United presented their project to him and told him he would have a “big salary.” Although it is not stated, this may have been the turning point in the deal.

“Manchester United are insisting on the player side, a big salary, a big project, everything being presented to the players, so Man United are trying their best,” Romano explained on his YouTube channel on Wednesday morning.

Further, Romano also explained that Lille club president Olivier Létang directly told the young star to sign for United over Real Madrid – although this is likely due to their superior bid.

Yoro is flying to the United Kingdom to undergo a move. However, The Athletic article states that there is still work to be done before the Frenchman can be officially unveiled as an Old Trafford player.

United hope to have everything sorted as fast as possible to avoid a hijack and have Yoro join the squad for the USA section of their pre-season tour, where they will face Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool.
