Mainoo, Ugarte, Malacia: Manchester United’s injury news vs Newcastle (Premier League)
Rúben Amorim has multiple absences to deal with as Manchester United prepare to face Newcastle United in the Premier League in their final game of 2024.
Manchester United are gearing up to face Newcastle United on Monday evening in their final game of 2024, with Rúben Amorim aiming to lift his team from 14th place in the Premier League.
Three consecutive defeats to Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wolverhampton Wanderers have drawn sharp criticism, as lacklustre performances have left fans and pundits deeply frustrated.
Amorim’s 3-4-3 system is still being implemented, but the adjustment period has exposed vulnerabilities, particularly in defending set pieces—a recurring issue over the past month.
With the festive fixture list in full swing, a home victory against Newcastle could provide a much-needed boost. However, the Magpies arrive in high spirits following a commanding 3-0 midweek win over Aston Villa.
Amorim has up to six absences vs Newcastle
Amorim may see as many as five players miss the tie against Newcastle at Old Trafford due to a mixture of injury and suspension.
First off, both Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte will miss the clash on the 30th as they both found themselves suspended off the back of the Wolves defeat.
Fernandes will serve a one-game ban due to picking up a red card through two yellow cards, while Ugarte was handed his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season. As this was before the halfway point of the league campaign, he will also serve a one-game ban.
Kobbie Mainoo was spotted limping after he came off against Wolves, although it’s unclear if this was due to an injury or fatigue. This will likely only be cleared up once United announce the line-up to face Newcastle on Monday evening.
Luke Shaw and Mason Mount remain sidelined through injury. While the former should be back sometime in the new year, Mount is expected to remain out of action until March 2025 following a hamstring problem.
Victor Lindelöf is also unavailable after suffering an injury against Tottenham last week. Tyrell Malacia and Marcus Rashford were absent from the squad that faced Wolves, but it was confirmed that neither player was injured.
For Newcastle, centre-back Jamaal Lascelles is out until February due to an ACL injury, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is sidelined with a knee problem.
Striker Callum Wilson has suffered a setback in his recovery and will not play. Emil Krafth is out after breaking his collar bone, while Sven Botman is back in training after an ACL injury but remains a doubt.
In positive news for Eddie Howe’s side, midfielder Joelinton was a doubt for their clash against Villa, but started the game and scored the side’s third, making him fully fit to face United.
