One of Manchester United’s reported summer transfer targets has rejected a £100,000-a-week offer from a Premier League rival, with a switch to Old Trafford still possible.

Manchester United are preparing to overhaul their midfield this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to address ongoing issues in the centre of the pitch.

United have struggled for creativity throughout the season, often failing to break down defences and rarely scoring more than once per game. Their inconsistency at Old Trafford has only added to concerns over midfield control.

January saw several loan departures, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.

Further midfield departures are expected in the summer. Christian Eriksen is set to leave when his contract expires, while Casemiro is no longer part of Amorim’s long-term plans.

As a result, United are preparing for a crucial transfer window, identifying midfielders who can bring more creativity, energy, and tactical flexibility to fit Amorim’s vision.

With United looking for midfielders who can add to Amorim’s attacking and defensive midfield ranks, they are aiming for players who can add value to the squad while not squeezing their budget too hard.

While Amorim will have funds this summer, United are thought to be looking at value-for-money transfers, with the head coach appreciating Lille’s Angel Gomes, who will be a free agent in the summer market once his current contract expires.

With Gomes on the radar for many sides across Europe, The Guardian have now revealed that the 24-year-old has rejected a contract offer from West Ham of around £100,000-a-week.

As well as reported concrete interest from United, The Guardian claim that Gomes is also attracting interest from La Liga outfit Barcelona.

A door open for Gomes’ United return

As many know, Gomes is a product of United’s Carrington Academy, having made his debut for the club in August 2016.

However, the young star departed after failing to bed himself into the first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjær and signed for Lille in 2020, and has since established himself as one of the best midfield talents in France.

With his status as a free agent, the door for Gomes to return to Old Trafford is certainly open, and the player himself has previously addressed that he would like to return to United one day.

“There will always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course, it’d be difficult to say no,” Gomes admitted last year when asked if he would be open to the move.

In a separate interview, Gomes stated: “Do I imagine myself coming back one day? It’s home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
