Manchester United have been handed a worrying update surrounding Alejandro Garnacho amid Napoli’s hot pursuit of Rúben Amorim’s winger.

Manchester United find themselves in the 2025 January transfer window during a challenging period, having suffered four consecutive defeats in the Premier League and Carabao Cup before the new year.

A battling 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool and a dramatic FA Cup penalty shootout win over Arsenal have provided a much-needed boost in early 2025, alleviating some of the pressure on the squad.

Rúben Amorim is tasked with addressing the team’s key shortcomings, including the urgent need for a left-back, a centre-back, a striker, and several midfielders. However, financial constraints following significant spending under Erik ten Hag have made securing reinforcements a difficult task.

To navigate these challenges, United are prioritising player sales in January and the summer to generate funds and build the resources needed for a vital rebuild.

United handed Garnacho to Napoli transfer update

Earlier in January, it was stated that United would be reluctantly open to the sale of young winger Alejandro Garnacho should the transfer make financial sense amid the club’s Profit and Sustainability Regulation issues.

Since then, Napoli have been gunning hard for the 20-year-old as a replacement for the departing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is set to sign for Paris St. Germain in a deal worth around £60 million this month.

Reports on Monday stated that Napoli had sent a bid of around £38 million to United as an initial offer. United rebuffed the proposal and are said to be demanding upwards of £60 million for the talented player.

However, according to Italian journalist Mirko Calemme, the mini saga is far from over, with contacts now set to continue as Napoli look to find a solution.

Calemme states that although the negotiation for Napoli to secure Garnacho is very difficult, it is certainly a “real” possibility, with Napoli working daily to secure the forward.

Napoli boss Antonio Conte is reportedly demanding that his club sign Garnacho as he sees the Argentinian winger as a perfect replacement for Kvaratskhelia.

The latest Garnacho update is worrying

Amid all the reports, United fans will be right to feel worried about the genuine possibility of Garnahco leaving.

Calemme explains within his claim that United will need to hand Napoli a discount in order for a deal to be finalised.

Although negotiations with most clubs would see the Manchester club stand firm on their valuation of Garnacho, United and Napoli have a good working relationship following the transfer of Scott McTominay in the summer.

Naturally, this may leave a little more wiggle room for Napoli to secure Garnacho if they continue to push hard for the player.

Garnacho’s entourage are said to have already held talks with Napoli regarding a potential contract should the two clubs agree on a sale fee. However, there is little indication surrounding Garnacho’s thoughts on the proposed move.
