Manchester United rule out transfer move after Erik ten Hag’s clear demand
Manchester United have essentially ruled out one transfer move this summer with Erik ten Hag’s summer demands being clear.
The Reds have added Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro to their squad this summer. The Dutch striker, Zirkzee, offers crucial support for Rasmus Højlund.
The 23-year-old is viewed by the club as a versatile forward, and reports indicate that they might re-enter the market for another striker in the future.
Ivan Toney has been linked with an Old Trafford move this summer, with Brentford keen to sell him before his contract expires next summer.
Yet, according to Sky Germany, the Reds are not planning on signing Toney this summer, with no concrete talks or negotiations having taken place.
It was explained that United is focused on other targets this summer, and a deal is ‘very unlikely’—Højlund and Zirkzee are also viewed as the club’s future, the report added.
Toney’s signing doesn’t quite make sense after Zirkzee came in, mainly due to the other potential signings the club can make.
Toney, Højlund and Zirkzee would be extremely good depth for the striker position but problems would continue elsewhere in terms of depth.
Speaking to the media this month, Ten Hag explained that he believes the squad’s depth needs further improvement in a season that will be ‘survival of the fittest’.
“I want the squad to be as strong as possible,” said Ten Hag. “We already made two very good buys, so when everyone is fit, we have a team that can beat everyone.
“But with squad depth, we need to catch up because we had injuries. This season will be survival of the fittest.
“We are looking in all the positions to reinforce. We need a plan with the squad to make sure we’re occupied in every area.”
