Man United new shirt number revealed in Instagram post as three new signings in squad vs Arsenal
Jonny Evans has signed a one-year deal to remain at Manchester United following his short-term contract across pre-season.
The veteran defender played three games during United’s eight-game warm up for the Premier League start, with an aim to help with the younger players within the squad.
Despite Harry Maguire remaining at the club for the season, Evans has still been offered to extend his stay at the club he rose through the academy with.
The Northern Irish defender left Old Trafford initially in 2015 and joined West Brom. He would then move to Leicester City in 2018 and left The Foxes at the expiry of his contract in June.
When pictured alongside Erik ten Hag and his family after officially re-signing however, it seems that Evans has revealed what squad number he will have this season before it has been formally announced.
The defender, who was wearing his training gear whilst having his photo taken, had the no.4 on his shorts – the number previously worn by the departed Phil Jones – despite wearing no.27 across pre-season.
Whilst players used to wear any odd pair of shorts or any number shirt – in the United squad each player consistently wears the training gear matching their appropriate squad number.
The full squad number list is expected to be confirmed ahead of the clash against Arsenal on Sunday, with new striker Rasmus Hojlund yet to be given a number.
Whilst Evans’ reveal was likely accidental, it continues a trend of players announcing squad numbers before the club this summer, after Alejandro Garnacho confirmed his change to no.17 earlier this week.
Evans has been included in the matchday squad to face The Gunners following Raphaël Varane’s injury.
Other new signings Altay Bayindir and Sergio Regulion are also with the team for the counter.
Despite the club announcing his signing, Sofyan Amrabat is not included in the squad for the game. He will have to wait until after the international break to make his debut for the club.
