Manchester United are close to signing another first-team coach with prior Premier League experience ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Reds have been making changes in and around Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad since INEOS took charge of operations.

Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee have already been added to the squad in the transfer market, but there have also been widespread changes behind the scenes.

Dan Ashworth, Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada have come in to lead the project while Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake have joined as Ten Hag’s new assistant coaches.

Andreas Georgson has previously led the set-pieces at both Brentford and Arsenal before moving to Swedish outfit Malmö FF.

He soon returned to England, joining Jason Wilcox at Southampton as the club’s first-team Set-Piece Coach. The new United technical director rates Georgson highly.

“Andreas has an excellent understanding of the game model we’re building here, in which set-pieces play an important role,” Wilcox said when the Swede joined the Saints.

“He is an expert in what he does and truly eats, sleeps and breathes set-pieces, adding another string to our bow within the backroom staff supporting Russell and the team.”

According to Sportbladet, Georgson is now very much in the running for a role at
Old Trafford to be part of Ten Hag’s coaching team and have a similar role as he had at Arsenal, Southampton and Brentford.

Similarly to Van Nistelrooy and Hake, Georgson looks set to move back into his prior set-piece role to join the Reds after having taken the first managerial job of his career in December 2023 with Lillestrøm.

The aforementioned report added that the set-piece expert has several other big clubs eyeing his services if a move to United does not materialise.

However, he is expected to leave his current role in the coming days, and it appears that his Old Trafford move is almost complete.

The Reds previously had Eric Ramsay controlling the set-pieces at Carrington but that role was soon shared among Ten Hag’s staff, with Ramsay becoming a more prominent coaching figure.

He departed from the club midway through the 2023/24 campaign to become the youngest manager in MLS history with Minnesota United.
