Luke Shaw has named the most underrated player he’s ever seen and many Manchester United fans will agree with his opinion.

Shaw, 28, has now been at United for a decade after signing for the club in the summer of 2014 from Southampton. He became the most expensive teenager in the world at £27 million.

It hasn’t been simple for the left-back at Old Trafford after experiencing multiple career-threatening injuries. He is a tremendous player when fit but those injury concerns still plague him.

The 28-year-old missed out on the FA Cup final victory last month but is vying to prove his fitness to Gareth Southgate so he can make the plane for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.

However, while speaking to England media, who asked Shaw to create his favourite Three Lions starting team, the United defender made a big statement about his former teammate and coach Michael Carrick.

The pair played alongside each other from 2014 to 2018, and Carrick then moved into a coaching role at United until shortly after Ole Gunnar Solskjær departed in the 2021/22 campaign.

Shaw included the midfielder in his ideal England XI and claimed that he is the most underrated player he has ever seen in huge praise for the now Middlesborough boss, who has just signed a new contract at the Riverside Stadium.

“He was probably the most underrated player I’ve ever seen in football,” the defender stated. “Until I joined Manchester United, I didn’t realise how good he was and how important he was for the team.

“He had everything you needed for a pivot. He was always in the right positions and defended well, interceptions. All of that he was brilliant at.

“The best aspect of his game was the way he placed the ball. He made everything look so simple. He was unbelievable; he had everything.”

Criminally, Carrick only made 34 caps during his international career, and it is often claimed that if England managers had ignored the Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard midfield and brought Carrick in for more balance, the ‘Golden Generation’ could have won something.

United fans are well aware of the ability Carrick possessed, and since he retired in 2018, they have only perhaps had Nemanja Matic and Casemiro, who could be in similar conversations, but unfortunately, neither were able to show the consistency levels that Carrick displayed.
