Liam Delap hints at “incredible” reason why he signed for Chelsea over Manchester United, it isn’t about Champions League football

Liam Delap has been speaking about his decision to join Chelsea this summer after the Premier League club announced the signing this week.

After a disappointing season, Manchester United are wasting no time in the transfer market as they look to reshape the squad ahead of the new campaign.

Matheus Cunha has already been announced as Ruben Amorim’s first signing of the summer, while Bryan Mbeumo is keen to follow suit, with negotiations with Brentford expected to begin this week.

The club also remains on the lookout for a new striker although experienced a setback when Liam Delap opted to join Chelsea over them.

Delap was the priority striker target and was available for just £30 million, but the Reds were unable to convince him of the switch to Old Trafford, with the lack of Champions League football said to be a key reason.

Delap hints at incredible reason for Chelsea move

Delap was officially announced as a Chelsea player on Wednesday evening and spoke about his decision to join the Stamford Bridge club this summer.

It was notable that the 22-year-old mentioned that he sees the London-based club as an ‘incredible place’ to develop as a player.

While that statement can be argued against, there is no denying that young strikers have not been excelling at Old Trafford recently.

“I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach,” Delap told Chelsea’s club media team.

“It’s going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.”

There were concerns about Delap to United

Most United fans were wary about the fact that Delap only really had one season at the top level and is the same age as Rasmus Højlund, who has struggled massively.

It seems like he was probably concerned about that too, with the pressure placed on United’s no.9 being no joke. Delap will not be relied on nearly as much at Chelsea and will probably get the chance to develop behind the scenes more.

United still haven’t identified their preferred alternative to the England youth international although lots of supporters are hoping that they will be proven like Mbeumo and Cunha.

While the Reds want to utilise younger players, it was quite clear that the strike-force has needed some quality and experience in there and Delap’s move is probably the best for all involved.
