Erik ten Hag needs to deal with several different problems at Manchester United ahead of the Premier League clash against Brentford.

The Reds are coming off the back of an embarrassing 3-2 loss against Galatasaray in the Champions League, which leaves Ten Hag’s side rock bottom of their group.

Attention turns back to the Premier League, where United have lost two of their last three games. However, there is reportedly no pressure on the position of Ten Hag as manager at the moment.

But he must be able to turn things around soon at the club, and the potential return of one player could help the Dutchman solve one major problem which has been seen in recent games.

It has been reported by Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News that United will reassess the risk element of Sergio Reguilon’s muscular injury ahead of the Old Trafford clash against Thomas Frank’s side.

The club have provisionally planned to prepare the Spanish left-back for the Premier League game after he missed the last two games through injury. He was not involved in team training on Monday but has conducted individual sessions on the grass as he continues his recovery.

His potential return could allow Ten Hag to field a midfield three that finally addresses the issues that he’s been concerned about this season.

“What we missed in our squad was behind Casemiro, another one, a typical holding midfielder,” stated Ten Hag last month. “Amrabat can play alongside Casemiro, he’s also capable in a higher position [and] he can play as a wing-back or full-back.”

Of course, since then, the Moroccan international has started three games in a row but all of those appearances have come at left-back due to the injury crisis.

Reguilon coming back would allow Ten Hag to play Amrabat in midfield and make a decision on whether he plays alongside Casemiro, or replace him at the base of the midfield.

The Brazilian has had a difficult start to the season both on and off the ball. Amrabat brings a more calming presence on the ball, which could allow United to be more comfortable progressing the ball, but also could be an upgrade out of possession in the deeper role at this current time.

However, Casemiro has also been one of the only United players who have offered danger in the opposition box, with seven goal contributions this season already, which could influence Ten Hag to play him further forward as an advanced number eight.

Nevertheless, the makeup of the midfield with Amrabat involved could solve some of the manager’s problems, as long as Sergio Reguilon is back fit, which will ultimately depend on the risk assessment of his injury and recovery, especially as the international break follows on from this game.
