Joshua Zirkzee explains his playstyle as Man United deal confirmed, two options clear

Joshua Zirkzee has already explained his playstyle after Manchester United reached an agreement with Bolgona for his transfer.

The Netherlands international is set to be United’s first signing under the INEOS era, according to Fabrizio Romano, who confirmed that an agreement has been reached.

United had expressed strong interest in Zirkzee in recent weeks, and the deal was finalised following his exit from Euro 2024 on Wednesday evening.

Last season, Zirkzee scored 12 goals and provided seven assists for Bologna, playing a key role in the club’s first Champions League qualification since the 1960s.

However, United’s new signing is not a typical no.9, and he has already explained his style of play in a recent interview with Corriere della Sera.

“I want people to have fun when they come to see me. But more than individually, it’s better to impress the stadium as a team in the way we play.

Creativity is the best way to express yourself. Creativity at the service of the team is a lethal combination.”

Asked what his best attribute is, Zirkzee added: “Without a doubt, the gift is the technique: it is the way of showing everyone my essence. You say I’m spectacular? Well, I’m Dutch: this is the most correct definition.”

Reports have stated that United do not only see Zirkzee as an extra option up front, but also as a versatile player across the front line.

“On the pitch now, my movements are different,” he explained when speaking about former Bologna boss Thiago Mota. “He gave me freedom, he allows me to play tailor-made football. I have a certain ability, he gives me the confidence to enhance it: a great feeling.

“I’m not a pure centre forward. I said a year ago that I liked playing with an attacking partner. But Motta transformed me into a 9 and a half. I’m not an Arnautovic, I like to come towards, play the ball, help the team. And score goals.”

United fans are excited to see what Zirkzee can offer, and there are two main options which he can offer to the team.

Firstly, and most likely, he can play as the centre-forward in the usual system Erik ten Hag operates with. However, there would be further emphasis on the wide players acting as ‘inside forwards’ – this will likely get the best out of someone like Marcus Rashford.

Interestingly, Zirkzee could also play alongside Rasmus Højlund in a two-man partnership, as the pair have complementary traits.
